Rabbit Ears Pass is a 9,000 foot plus alpine area easily accessible by highway US 40. While Dumont Lake campground features spaced out campsites and easy highway access it can often be booked nearly solid from June through September. Rabbit ears features extensive dispersed camping options throughout the area with forest service roads that spur off both north and south directions of the route. Fire-pits are common but are usually disallowed from use during frequent summer fire bans. Access to the town of Steamboat Springs is a reasonable drive from this area.
Road condition as of August 2020 is decent. Multiple stock van rigs were spotted on roads north of US 40 including a 2016 Dodge Ram Pro Master. A lifted 1996 Dodge Ram B250 was also spotted. Road conditions may deteriorate the further traveled from US 40. Snow banks can cover portions of road into July depending on snowpack. On the roads above Dumont Lake, north of the highway, heavy mountain bike and hiker traffic can be present.
